Do this when the Hydra Head goes away, then when the Ball makes it, roll it along the floor and onto the lone Gust Platform nearby. You’ll want to stand at a point where you can safely pull the Ball diagonally across the platforms without it dropping off the side. ![]() Get the Ball onto the next line of Gust Platforms and head to the opposite side. There is an easier way though! Just stand on the Gust Platforms past the Hydra Head, wait for it to disappear, then pull the Wooden Ball across! ![]() Make it to the end, and a Hephaistos Helmet is yours!īack at the main puzzle, the game expects you to stand on the platforms alongside the Gust Platforms to pull the Wooden Ball past the Hydra Head in the middle. Don’t worry if you fail this part a lot: it’s one of the hardest platforming sequences in the game. You’ll need to Double Jump almost as soon as you land on the next Hydra Head or you won’t be able to keep up with them. The trick is that the second and fourth Hydra Heads overlap the heads before them, so to get on you need to Double Jump earlier than normal and stay in place, so that the Hydra Head will appear underneath you. Your task is to jump on them as they appear so you can get high enough to Glide to where the chest is. Pull it and observe what happens: a series of four Hydra Heads appear one-by-one. A Hydra Head will appear and knock it across the Gust Platforms and into a Ball Socket Switch! This will spawn in a Wooden Ball at the next Checkpoint so you can continue.īefore you do that though, it’s time for this level’s hidden chest! Jump along the platforms on the left-hand side of the next section until you get to the Lever. Jump down and make sure it’s in the exact middle, then jump up and hit the Switch. Now you need to roll the ball off the edge near the Switch and onto the lower square. The Ball will take too long to cross over the Gust Platforms if you roll it by hand (meaning the Hydra Heads will knock it off), so instead cross over to the opposite side and, once the Hydra Heads have done their thing, pull it across with Herakles’s Strength. Now roll the ball to the left and place it at the edge of the floor. To get it off safely, wait until the Hydra Head appears between you and it, then pull the Ball off: it’ll roll along the top of the Hydra Head so you can collect it safely. To begin, head forward and hit the Switch on the right to spawn a Wooden Ball on the tiny platform ahead. ![]() This Vault’s puzzles are focused around pulling Wooden Balls over Gust Platforms with Herakles’s Strength whilst avoiding Hydra Heads that want to knock them off into the abyss.

The alpine lounge upstairs, designed for 24/7 action, has cushy recessed beds, shelves of sugared cereal and a big-screen TV with premium channels and video game consoles thrown in. Nearby, there's a bullpen of high-octane PCs customized specifically for death matches. Downstairs from Romero's office, the workers' rec room brims with vintage arcade games, a pool table, ping-pong, foosball. They've cashed in so much, in fact, that their Man is now encased 54 floors into heaven (in what has become a rather famous downtown Dallas skyscraper). The rush is so good, so pure, so visceral, they eagerly cash in their paychecks every time a new Romero game hits the shelves. In real life, gamers - mainly guys between 18 and 34 - are students, bankers, lawyers and drummers, but in Doom or Quake or Daikatana they're warriors, ruthless, immortal and totally in control. This pain is precisely what millions of tragically limited mortals around the world are counting on Romero to deliver. "Eww," he says, as I burst into human gravy, "that hurt!" Romero swivels in front of his computer with jet black headphones perched above his speed-metal coif. "You are so dead!" It's deep into another endless day at Ion Storm and John Romero is truly in his element: trash-talking in a spontaneous death match, a head-to-head computer game showdown where the player with the most kills wins. As Ogre and the other hardcore gamers at Ion Storm know, to live these fantasies you can't let the forces against you get in your way. But the fetish surrounding Ion Storm's growing pains has obscured a deeper mystery: Why do people like these young developers turn over their lives to a computer game? It comes with the territory for Romero, who co-created two of the genre's bestsellers to date, Doom and Quake.
